Imagine a world where therapy involves more than just sitting in a space, engaging in a therapeutic relationship with your therapist. Enter nature-inspired therapy, also known as ecotherapy, a holistic approach that integrates the healing power of nature into counseling sessions. This ancient process is gaining popularity in contemporary therapy evolution, promoting emotional wellbeing, stressor reduction, whilst potentially reframing one's existence and enhancing positive behaviors, and overall mental wellness.

At the Green Room Therapy, connection to nature may play a role in the therapeutic process. By incorporating elements of the natural world into sessions, clients can experience a deeper sense of connection, grounding, and relaxation. Whether it's a walk in the park, mindfulness exercises in a garden, or simply incorporating nature-inspired metaphors into conversations, ecotherapy techniques offer a unique way to tap into the healing energy of the great outdoors.

Current research* has shown that spending time in nature can have profound effects on our mental health. From reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression to boosting self-esteem and enhancing overall mood, the benefits of ecotherapy are far-reaching. By immersing ourselves in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature, we can experience a sense of calm and perspective that is often hard to find in our fast-paced modern lives. One of the key principles of ecotherapy is the idea of reciprocity - the notion that our connection to nature is mutually beneficial. Just as nature has the power to heal us, we also have a responsibility to care for and protect the environment.

By fostering a deeper reverence for the natural world, ecotherapy encourages us to cultivate a more sustainable lifestyle and a greater sense of interconnectedness with all living beings. So, the next time you're feeling overwhelmed or stuck, consider incorporating some nature-inspired therapy into your healing journey. Whether it's a mindful walk in the woods, a meditation by the ocean, or simply bringing a touch of greenery into your living space, connecting with nature can be a powerful tool for restoring balance and promoting emotional well-being.

In the wise words of John Muir in 1877 (Scottish American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness);

"In every walk with nature, one receives far more than they seek".

Depression and anxiety: A systematic review comparing ecotherapy with cognitive behavioral therapy,

Journal of Environmental Psychology

Abstract: The beneficial impacts of nature on individuals' mental well-being are not only significant for enhancing their lifestyles but may also contribute to the treatment of mental health conditions. This systematic review examines whether ecotherapy can achieve outcomes comparable to those of traditional cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy in treating depression and anxiety disorders, and whether combining the two methods could be advantageous.
